On 14th October Waltham Abbey’s King Harold Day remembered the passing of Harold ll, the last English king.

This has been an annual event, interrupted briefly by Covid, but was back in full splendour this year.

It is an important ceremony, not just because we have the memorial stone here in Waltham Abbey, but because societies across the country give great historical importance to remembering the last truly English king.

Historical facts were read, an address given by the Abbey Church, and the event was made more special by the fact that it was led by many people in the dress of the period (11th century), carrying weapons of the time and playing similarly authentic instruments.

Also in attendance were the Town Crier and the Mayor of Waltham Abbey.

The Chamber was represented by our chairman (Carol Byatt), and one of our committee members (Paul Violet), who had the pleasure of laying a memorial sheath of flowers on behalf of the Waltham Abbey Town Partnership.

We look forward to being part of Waltham Abbey’s King Harold Day 2024
